Earthquake Preparedness 101

With all of the earthquakes we have had recently in the southern California area, we wanted to make sure our friends were prepared. We've heard the story for years about the "big one" coming to our area. However, it does not have to be the "big one" to cause serious problems for our area. Making sure your family is prepared is the main priority. Informing them of safe areas to protect themselves and your evacuation plans. The second priority is to make sure your home is prepared. Below are a few key points to remember.

Create a Plan- Make sure you and your family know all the "safe spots" in the home, such as against inside walls, as well as the "danger spots" in the home such as windows, mirrors, hanging objects and fireplaces. Conduct practice drills. Physically place yourself and your children in the safe locations in the home. Decide where and when the family will reunite, if separated. Develop a portable survival kit for your home and for travel, with at least a week's worth of food and water.

Prepare your Home- Learn how to shut off gas, water and electricity in your home in case power lines are damaged. Secure heavy furnishings. Secure your water heater and other appliances that could move and disrupt utility lines. Maintain emergency food, water, medicine, a first aid kit, tools and clothing for earthquake aftermath.
